How Long Does Nanoplasty Last? And How to Make It Last Longer
Published · 3 min read
Nanoplasty typically lasts 3 to 6 months. That’s a wide range, and where you land in it depends mostly on two things you control: what you wash with and how often.
Why the range is so wide
| Factor | Pushes toward 3 months | Pushes toward 6 months |
|---|---|---|
| Shampoo | Regular shampoo with sulfates or salt | Sulfate-free, salt-free |
| Wash frequency | Daily | 2–3 times a week |
| Water | Hard water, no filter | Shower filter, occasional clarifying |
| Swimming | Frequent chlorine or salt water | Rarely, or rinsed right away |
| Heat styling | High heat every day | Air-dry or low heat |
| Hair type | Very curly or coarse (texture returns sooner) | Wavy or frizzy-straight |
| Application | Rushed ironing | Thorough, small-section ironing |
How it fades
Nanoplasty doesn’t stop working all at once. It wears off gradually with each wash, and your natural texture slowly returns. Because it isn’t a permanent relaxer, there’s no hard line where new growth meets treated hair. Most people notice frizz creeping back at the roots and crown first, then in humid weather.
Aftercare that makes it last longer
The big one: your shampoo
Use sulfate-free and salt-free shampoo (check for “sodium chloride” on the label). Sulfates and salt are the fastest way to strip a smoothing treatment. This one change makes more difference than everything else on this list combined.
Wash less often
Every wash removes a little of the treatment. If you wash daily now, try every other day, using dry shampoo in between if needed.
Handle Chicago water
Lake Michigan tap water is moderately hard, and minerals build up on smoothed hair. A shower filter helps, and so does an occasional sulfate-free clarifying wash if your stylist approves it. More in why Chicago hair needs nanoplasty.
Protect it in the pool and at the lake
Wet your hair with clean water and apply a leave-in before swimming, then rinse right after.
Go easy on heat
One of nanoplasty’s benefits is that you need less heat styling. When you do use heat, use a heat protectant and moderate temperatures.
Condition, but lightly
Use a conditioner or mask that’s compatible with smoothing treatments, mostly from mid-lengths to ends. Heavy oils at the roots can weigh smoothed hair down.
The first few days matter
Follow your stylist’s instructions exactly for the first 48–72 hours, since some products need time to set. Washing rules vary by product. See what to expect at your appointment.
When to book your next session
Most people rebook when:
- frizz is back on humid days,
- styling time is creeping back up, or
- the roots behave noticeably differently from the ends.
For many Chicago clients that works out to two sessions a year: late spring before humidity, and fall before the dry indoor-heat months. Waiting until your hair feels fully back to normal is better than redoing it too soon, because repeat treatments too close together can stress the hair.
