9 Questions to Ask a Salon Before Booking Nanoplasty

Published · 2 min read

Nanoplasty is still new compared to keratin, and quality varies widely. Two salons can charge the same price and use completely different products with very different results. These nine questions take five minutes on the phone and tell you most of what you need to know.

1. Which brand and product do you use?

A confident stylist names it right away. “Our own nanoplasty” or “an organic formula” with no brand is a reason to dig further. Once you have the name, you can look up reviews and the ingredient list.

2. Can I see the ingredient list?

You’re entitled to know what’s going on your hair. Look for:

  • Formaldehyde or formaldehyde releasers, such as methylene glycol, formalin, or formaldehyde, which shouldn’t be in a product sold as formaldehyde-free.
  • Glyoxylic acid or its derivatives. They’re common in formaldehyde-free straighteners, and safety research on them is still evolving. Read more in is nanoplasty really formaldehyde-free?

3. How many nanoplasty treatments have you done, on hair like mine?

Experience matters more for nanoplasty than for most services, because results depend on even application and careful ironing. Ask to see photos of their own clients with a similar texture to yours, not the brand’s marketing images.

4. Is the price fixed, or does it change with length and thickness?

Most salons charge more for long or thick hair. Ask for the total price for your hair, including the clarifying wash, any trim, and the take-home shampoo if it’s required. See what nanoplasty costs in Chicago for typical ranges.

5. How long will my appointment take?

Expect 2.5–4 hours. A quote of 90 minutes for long, thick hair can mean the ironing step is being rushed. Here’s what a full appointment looks like.

6. When can I wash my hair, and what shampoo do I need?

Rules vary by product, from same-day washing to a few days’ wait. You’ll also need a sulfate-free, salt-free shampoo. Find out whether the salon requires a specific brand and what it costs.

7. Can I color before or after, and when?

Many stylists want color done about two weeks before or after nanoplasty, but this depends on the product. If you color regularly, plan your schedule around it. More in keratin and color-treated hair.

8. Will you do a strand test?

For bleached, highlighted, or fragile hair, a strand test is a sign of a careful stylist. If your hair is processed and they don’t mention one, ask.

9. What happens if I’m unhappy with the result?

Some salons offer a touch-up or adjustment within a set window, such as two weeks. Find out before you pay rather than after.

Bonus: questions for yourself

  • What result do I actually want: fully straight, or just less frizz? Tell the stylist, so they can adjust the strength.
  • Am I OK losing some volume? Smoother hair often lies flatter.
  • Will I actually use sulfate-free shampoo? If not, results won’t last as long. See how long nanoplasty lasts.
