Nanoplasty for Curly Hair: Will It Straighten Your Curls?
Published · 2 min read
If you have curly hair, “will it make my hair straight?” is the first question, closely followed by “can I get my curls back?” Here’s what nanoplasty realistically does across curl types.
Short answer
Nanoplasty smooths and relaxes curls. On wavy and loosely curly hair it usually leaves hair close to straight. On tighter curls it mostly softens and loosens the pattern, cuts frizz, and makes hair far easier to manage, but it usually won’t make hair pin-straight in one session.
By curl type
| Curl type | Typical result |
|---|---|
| 2A–2C (waves) | Smooth and mostly straight; air-dries sleek |
| 3A (loose curls) | Near-straight to soft waves |
| 3B (springy curls) | Loose waves, very little frizz, much faster to blow out |
| 3C (tight curls) | Noticeably looser and softer; blowouts become easy |
| 4A–4C (coils) | Softer, more defined, easier to detangle; still textured |
How strongly the stylist applies the product, and how many passes they make with the iron, changes the result. Tell them clearly what you want.
Can you keep some curl?
Often, yes. Many stylists can adjust nanoplasty for a “frizz-free curls” result instead of full straightening, for example with fewer flat-iron passes or a lighter application. Not every product or stylist does this well, so ask directly:
“I want less frizz and easier styling, but I’d like to keep my curl pattern. Can you do that with your product?”
If the answer is vague, a cysteine treatment may suit you better. It’s gentler and usually leaves more movement.
Will my curls come back?
Yes, gradually. Nanoplasty is semi-permanent and fades over 3–6 months as you wash. New growth comes in with your natural pattern, so there’s no hard line like a relaxer leaves. Some people find curls return a little looser for a while, and treated hair that’s been ironed repeatedly can take longer to bounce back.
Things curly clients should know
- Volume changes. Curly hair gets much of its volume from its pattern. Smoothed hair lies flatter, and some people love that while others miss their volume.
- Your routine changes. Products made for curls (heavy creams, curl gels) can weigh smoothed hair down. You’ll likely use less product.
- Strand test if colored. Curly hair is often drier and more fragile, especially with highlights. A strand test is a smart step.
- Experience matters. Ask to see nanoplasty results on clients with curls like yours, not only on wavy hair.
Nanoplasty vs. a relaxer for curly hair
| Nanoplasty | Relaxer | |
|---|---|---|
| Permanence | Semi-permanent, fades | Permanent until it grows out |
| Result | Smoothing + relaxing | Fully straight |
| Regrowth line | No hard line | Visible line |
| Can return to curls | Yes, as it fades | Only by growing it out |
