Nanoplasty, Keratin, or Cysteine? How to Choose the Right Smoothing Treatment

Published · 3 min read

Ask three salons about frizz and you may get three different answers: keratin, cysteine, nanoplasty. All three smooth hair, they cost different amounts, and they don’t do the same thing. This guide helps you pick.

The quick answer

  • Choose nanoplasty if you want strong smoothing or straightening, longer wear, and no formaldehyde, and you’re fine paying more.
  • Choose keratin if you want a proven, lower-cost frizz fix and don’t mind a short no-wash period, or you’re happy with a formaldehyde-free keratin formula.
  • Choose cysteine if you want the gentlest option with the most natural finish, and lighter results are fine.

Five questions to decide

1. How much change do you want?

If you want hair that looks blown out after air-drying, that’s nanoplasty or a strong keratin. If you like your texture and just want less frizz, cysteine or a light keratin is plenty.

2. How do you feel about formaldehyde?

Classic keratin and Brazilian-style treatments release formaldehyde when heated. That’s the main reason many people look at nanoplasty and cysteine. Be aware that “formaldehyde-free” on a label isn’t the same as “no concerns”: some formaldehyde-free straighteners rely on glyoxylic acid, which has its own open safety questions. See is nanoplasty really formaldehyde-free? and our keratin safety guide.

3. How long do you want it to last?

If you only want to book twice a year, nanoplasty’s longer wear helps offset the higher price. If you’re testing smoothing for the first time, a shorter-lasting option is lower-risk.

4. What’s your hair’s condition?

Heavily bleached or fragile hair needs a careful stylist no matter what. Some will steer you toward cysteine or a bond-repair service first and smoothing later. Healthy hair, colored or not, usually handles any of the three.

5. What’s your budget, really?

Compare the cost per month, not the price per visit. A nanoplasty that lasts five months can cost less per month than a cheaper treatment you redo every eight weeks. Our Chicago nanoplasty cost guide breaks this down.

Common scenarios

  • “My wavy hair frizzes every summer and I want to air-dry.” Nanoplasty.
  • “I have thick, coarse hair and want maximum smoothness on a budget.” Traditional keratin, or an express keratin to test it first.
  • “I’m nervous about chemicals and want something subtle.” Cysteine. Read what a cysteine treatment is.
  • “I have tight curls and want them softer, not straight.” Talk to a stylist about a light nanoplasty or cysteine. See nanoplasty for curly hair.
  • “My hair is damaged and I mainly want it to feel healthier.” Consider a repair treatment first. Hair botox vs. keratin explains the difference.
